Hélène, publisher of romantic novels, lives alone and her entire existence is centered on her work activities. She seeks refuge in reading books and is convinced that life as portrayed therein is far more attractive than it is in actual reality. She likes her daily routine. But, one day, a certain Mrs. Mills, an eccentric American old lady, moves into the apartment across from hers and turns her routine completely upside-down. The border line between fiction and reality has never been so thin.
